Many of our favourite Fakeaway recipes have found their inspiration from popular Mexican foods, drawing from crowd-pleasing, sharing dishes that make every meal feel like a celebration.
Often the traditional versions of these recipes can be delicious yet decadent, and fairly high in calories – which is not ideal if you’re on a slimming journey. As always, we’ve got you covered though, with lots of Mexican-style dishes that you can cook in your own kitchen (and they’re all cheaper and healthier than restaurant versions).

Snacks and Sharers
One of the best things about Mexican-style food is that there are so many dishes made for sharing with friends and family. Whether you serve them as a starter, snack or side dish, nachos are a classic example of ‘the more the merrier’ approach to mealtimes.
Nothing gathers people around the dinner table faster than our Honey and Lime Pork Nachos. They look so vibrant and inviting, it’s no wonder there’s always a tussle to tuck in first!
The crunchy tortilla chips are topped with seasoned, honey-infused pork, melted cheese, fresh tomatoes, slices of red onion and a sprinkle of coriander. Don’t forget a dollop of our garlicky yoghurt dressing – it works so well as a lighter alternative to sour cream.
Move over tortilla chips, we mean business with these Chilli Cheesy Nachos. Our chunky potato wedges are perfect for dipping and dunking into the seriously cheesy filling. This one is definitely hearty enough to be served as a main meal if you prefer, with a homemade beef mince chilli spooned into the centre.
This can be just as spicy as you like it – feel free to use more or less chilli powder than our recipe suggests, depending on whether you like it hot or not!
A generous snack or a light lunch, these Mexican Style Crunch Wraps have layers of flavour in every single bite. We saw this clever wrap hack on TikTok and we just knew it would be perfect for loading up with Mexican-inspired flavours.
Each quarter of the wrap gets its own tasty filling; taco-seasoned beef, homemade guacamole, crushed tortilla chips and melted cheese, all neatly folded up and baked in the oven until the tortilla wrap is crunchy and golden.
Each Crunch Wrap comes in at 288 calories, making it the perfect slimming-friendly snack when you need some Mexican-style flavour in your life!
Spiced-up Side Dishes
Who said the main course gets to have all the fun? Your Fakeaway night needs some spicy, Mexican-style side dishes if you want to put on a balanced spread. From perfectly seasoned spuds to vegetables with a fiery flavouring, you won’t want to miss these off your menu!
We’ll start off with a firm favourite of ours; this Mexican Corn on the Cob goes with so many different recipes (and all kinds of cuisines). This really is a taste sensation, sweet, juicy corn, salty feta, spicy chilli and zesty lime.
As well as being low in calories, this recipe is so quick and easy to make. You can cook the corn any way you like; boil it, grill it or pop it on the barbecue. When it’s ready, load up those tasty toppings and get stuck in!
All you need is a handful of spices, an onion and a couple of spuds to rustle up these Mexican Potatoes. For just 115 calories per serving, you can dish up this delicious side dish of crispy, fiery potato cubes next time you’re making a Mexican-inspired meal.
We like ours really spicy, so we’ll always sprinkle in a little extra chilli powder – although there’s no need to be heavy handed if you prefer a milder taste. They come out of the oven so crispy, golden and fluffy in the middle. What a dream!
We dare you to try to resist these incredible Cheesy Avocado Salsa Wedges (there’s no need to resist – they’re far more slimming friendly than they look!). We’re talking crispy oven-baked potato wedges, coated in a fiery spice mix, topped with melted cheese and served with a dollop of fresh avocado salsa. Hungry yet?
A dream of a side dish, you’re going to love how well the sour and spicy flavours balance out. This is a great option for anyone who likes the chilli flavour without too much heat – the melted cheese, smooth avocado and sour cream topping works wonders to tame the chilli in the recipe.
Classic Main Courses
When you think of Mexican cuisine, there are always a few classic dishes that spring to mind. Often these are richly spiced, deeply-flavoured recipes that have creamy sauces or cheesy toppings, and lots and lots of calories.
We love to challenge ourselves to make lighter versions of our favourite foods, so it’ll come as no surprise that we’ve made some slimming-friendly recipes inspired by these classics. This Mexican Chilli Beef is the perfect example; it tastes so rich, yet it’s packed with fresh vegetables and just 340 calories per portion.
The secret ingredient? We’ve used ox cheeks! This is such an under-used cut of meat – it’s lovely and lean, with a beautiful flavour and texture if you take the time to cook it low and slow. This handy slow cooker recipe takes all the hard work out of your Mexican-inspired Fakeaway night, so you can leave it bubbling away all day while you get on with other jobs.
A family favourite, you can’t go wrong with a fajita night. Everyone will be excited to get stuck into these Chicken Fajitas, and there’s not a packet of spice mix in sight. Instead, we’ve used a homemade seasoning blend and it’s so much nicer than a shop-bought version (if we do say so ourselves).
Mixing up your own seasoning in this way puts you firmly in charge of the spice level, so the amount of chilli is all in your hands! Partner this juicy chicken and peppers dish with any of our Mexican-inspired sides for a fiesta of flavours that everyone will love.
Don’t be surprised when you don’t spot any wraps on the ingredients list for this Beef and Bean Burrito Bake. We decided to get creative and say ‘goodbye wraps, hello eggs’! Swapping out tortilla wraps for thin, spring onion omelettes cuts down on calories, and it makes the recipe gluten free too. Once the omelettes are loaded with spicy beef, smothered in our yoghurt-based sauce and topped with cheese, you’d never even know the difference.
Get the whole lot in the oven until the topping is melty and golden – just imagine how incredible this smells. It’s the best Mexican-style dish to make for a special occasion.
